Will my dial-up modem work with DSL?
Although DSL works over a standard phone line, your standard dial-up modem (ex 56k) will not work the UND's DSL service. DSL operates on a technology that differs greatly and is much faster than dial-up, therefore requires a special modem.

Will UND provide a DSL modem as part of the $50 a semester charge? Or can I rent one from the school?
A DSL model must be purchased separately. UND does not provide modems for rent.

Where can I purchase a DSL modem in Grand Forks?
The only place in Grand Forks that you can purchase a DSL modem configured for UND DSL is at the Wilkerson Convenience Store.

What if I do not want to purchase a DSL modem from the Wilkerson C-Store, what can I do then?
ResNet provides a list of compatible DSL modems on their website that can be purchased online. However, if you decide to purchase a DSL modem online, or from a vendor other than UND, ResNet cannot guarantee that the DSL modem you purchased will work on our DSL network. ResNet will try to the best of their ability to ensure the modem you purchase will work.

How do I go about getting online with UND's DSL service?
This is a three step process:

1. Go to the UND Housing office and fill out the appropriate paper work at the Housing Office's front desk. Or you can simply print out the required paper work from home (Contract, and Code of Ethics) and hand-in the completed forms at the Housing Office. Your DSL connection should be active in your apartment in 3 business days. ResNet will contact you when your DSL service is active.

2. Purchase a DSL modem from the Wilkerson C-Store.

3. Contact ResNet if you need help installing your DSL modem and connecting to the DSL service. 7-3424.

If I sign up for the DSL mid-way through the semester, will I be billed the full $50?
The billing is pro-rated. Meaning if you sign up for the DSL halfway through the semesters, you will only be billed half the amount.

Who gets billed for the DSL?
The leaseholder will have the DSL billed directly to their student account.

If I move to a different apartment on campus, can I keep my DSL connection, or do I have to cancel and re-request a connection?
Simply come down to the Housing office and let us know that you are changing addresses and wish to have your DSL service transferred to your new address.

How do I cancel by DSL service?
Simply come down to the Housing office and fill out a DSL Cancellation request form at the front desk. Or fill out and hand in this downloadable copy.

Who do I contact if my DSL isn't working in my apartment?
Contact ResNet at 777-3424 for assistance.

I had DSL through Qwest previously, will my DSL modem that I purchased from Qwest work with UND's DSL service?
Some, but not all Qwest DSL modems work on our UND DSL network. Most ADSL RFC1483 Type II bridged modems should work. However, you can check our compatibility list to determine whether or not your modem will work. ResNet will try to the best of their ability to ensure your modem will work on the UND DSL network.

Why does my DSL connection drop when my phone rings, or when I make a phone call?
In order to keep your connection from dropping, you will need DSL filters on ALL of the phones in your apartment. You can pick up these filers for free at the Housing Office. ($10 retail at Best Buy).

People sound quiet or distant on the phone, and there is a static-sound when I use the phone.
In order to resolve this issue, you will need to have DSL filters on ALL phones in your house.

Does the DSL service use Static or DHCP IP addressing?
UND's DSL service uses Dynamic IP addressing (DHCP)

Does my DSL need any special settings to work with the UND network?
Yes. You must set the VCI, VPI, and protocol settings that the UND DSL service uses. Some DSL modems will automatically detect these settings. However, you may need to specify them manually with the following settings:

VPI: 0
VCI: 32
Protocol: 1483 Bridged Ethernet LLC

What does the DSL acronym stand for?
DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line.

Can I have two or more computers on the DSL line at the same time?
Yes. The zoom modems provide connections for up to 4 devices.

What speeds can I expect on my DSL connection?
You can expect up to 1 Mbps download speeds and 1 Mbps upload speeds depending on the location of campus servers. On off-campus speeds depends greatly on the sites you are visiting.

Where can I pick up DSL filters?
You can pick up DSL filters at the Housing office (Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm)
