U-Mail frequently Asked Questions
Does Und Use a Firewall?
Yes! There is a firewall actively guarding each
residence hall. However, the apartment DSL is
not firewalled.
Read more about the Resident Hall firewall
here.
I'm Using a Phone Cord to Connect
to Resnet, Is This Right?
You will need to pick up an ethernet cord (patch
cable). Click here
for more information.
I Just Bought a New Computer, How
Do I Get It Set Up?
If you got a new computer, check to see if an
ethernet card is already installed with it. Most
new computers are installed with them already,
if not, you will need to purchase one. Once you
have the card, just call ResNet at 7-3424 to
make an appointment to get your computer set up,
or refer to our self
setup guide.
How Can I Connect To the Internet If
I Live Off Campus?
If you live off campus, you will need to have a
modem installed in your computer. You can find
information on how to setup your computer for
dial-up by checking out the Computer Center's
site here. This also applies if you live in
Greek houses. Campus Apartments have high-speed
DSL service available at an additional cost. For
more information about DSL service, click here.
How Much Does ResNet Cost?
There is NO additional cost for ResNet. You can
pick up an ethernet cable from ResNet to use for
the year. (The cable must be returned at the end
of the academic year.) There is NO per-minute
fee, and you will have internet connection 24
hours a day.
Does ResNet Use a Modem?
No, ResNet uses a network card which provides
faster speeds than a modem connection. And
the best part is that it WON'T tie up
your phone line.
What Kind of Network Card Will I
Need?
You will need a 10-Base-T Ethernet card. It will
need to be compatible with RJ-45 connectors.
This is the type of outlet on your wall. You are
not required to purchase a certain
manufacturer's card. As long as it is in working
order, and you have the driver disks that came
with it, we should be able to install it.
Newer computers will probably use PCI cards,
older ones will probable use ISA, and laptops
will use PCMCIA cards. When in doubt, just
call us at 7-3424 for help or contact a computer
store in the Grand Forks area.
How Can I Tell If I Have a Network
Card Installed Already?
Many manufacturers are selling computers with a
Network card already installed. To check look on
the back of your computer. You will see
what looks like a phone jack, but it is larger,
and there should by only one jack on the card
(not two like modems). If in doubt, call for
help (ResNet at 7-3424).
Where Can I Purchase A Network Card
for My Computer?
You can purchase them at the UND Barnes & Noble
Bookstore, or at a majority of the computer
stores in town. A card for a desktop will cost
between $20 to $80 dollars depending on brands
and specifications. A card for a laptop can
range from $60 to $160 depending on brand name
and specifications also. Just as a reminder, if
your computer is new, it might have a card
installed.
What Type of Computer Do I Need?
Most computers in use today can connect to our
network. However, we are recommending the
following as a minimum system:
- Windows XP Home or Professional Edition
- Pentium III or higher processor
- 256MB of RAM
- 100MB of free hard disk space
What Software Do I Need to Connect
to ResNet?
You don't need any special software. You just
need to have an Internet browser installed such
as Mozilla Firefox or
Internet Explorer.
What If I Run UNIX of Linux on My
Computer?
Unix and Linux are pretty complicated operating
systems. If you are able to get Unix and Linux
running, you probably have a pretty good idea
how to setup the network card by yourself.
ResNet doesn't support Unix or Linux computers
for setup, however, they are compatible with the
ethernet connection in the residence halls.
Remember, you must use a DYNAMIC IP address.
State IP addresses are not allows without
permission of ResNet.
What About My Aviation Laptop? How
Do I Set It Up?
The Aviation Department has their laptops
already configured to run with the ResNet
connection. Please stop by ResNet's office to
pick up your patch cable. For More information
on how to setup your laptop for Samba shares,
